Rethinking the edge

Reclaiming edges for resilience and diversity

STU 1221: Elements of Urban Design
Instructor: Stephen Gray
Team: Hongjin Yang, Liene Asahi Baptista
This exercise rethinks existing edge conditions to propose healthier interactions between water and population. The project extends the current urban axes to create an armature for new developments that will generate value for the neighborhood in the short term and proposes public programs to activate the waterfront while protecting housing against the threat of sea level rise in the long term. Strategies aim at transitioning scales, finding opportunities to provide new housing, and creating a resilient waterfront accessible to the public. New ways to interact with the water envision the reclamation of land previously taken solely for industrial production and implementing communal programs accessible to all.
